Welcome to All Visitors

Who are we?

St Peter’s Church, Glenfield welcomes all people of different ages and different backgrounds. Whoever you are, you are assured of a very warm welcome.

When to arrive:

We have three services on Sunday (9.00am, 10.15am and 6.30pm) and one on Wednesday (10.30am). It is probably best to turn up about 10-15 minutes before your chosen Service starts. If you are driving there is plenty of free parking. Our website has directions to the church and parking.

You will be greeted on the door by our welcoming team (sidespeople) who will hand you the hymn book, Service book and/or any leaflet that you will need to follow the Service. The notice sheet will give you information about the order of the Service, including the numbers of any hymns that may be sung.

What to wear:

This is easy - Wear whatever you feel comfortable in. We are an informal church and welcome people as they are.

What to expect:

For some people going somewhere for the first time can be a bit of a nerve-racking experience. To help avoid any worries here’s a quick summary of what you can expect at St Peter’s. First of all we aren’t super-spiritual beings, we all had a ‘first day’ at church. You will find that we are a friendly bunch, if you don’t understand something please simply ask, nudge someone nearby.

We generally start our meetings with a few minutes of notices keeping us informed of diary dates etc, then we spend between 60 and 90 minutes in worship, including Bible readings, a sermon, prayers and, depending on the time of the Service, hymns and worship songs.

If you are at a Holy Communion Service and are not able, or do not wish, to take part, you may either remain in your seat or you may join others going to the communion rail and by simply keeping your hands folded the clergy will say a prayer of blessing for you. At the end of each Service the Clergy and/or worship leaders will be by the door as you leave to speak to you if you wish or just to say ‘goodbye’

What kind of worship:

For our morning and Communion Services we use the Book of Common Worship.

  • On Sunday the 9.00am Service is a quiet Holy Communion Service with no music and using the traditional version of The Lord’s Prayer. It usually lasts not more than 50 minutes.
  • At 10.15am, the Service is a lot more varied. It may or may not include Holy Communion (see our Services page for upcoming services). The music is led by our music team with instruments and singers and is usually a mixture of traditional hymns and modern worship songs. At present there is no Sunday Club. The children come into church for the Service and an activity, connected with the theme of the Service, is provided for them if they wish to take advantage of it. Parents with small babies sometimes bring them into church for the Service but we do run a crèche for the little ones who can go straight into the Church Centre. After the Service, coffee, tea and juice are served in the Church Centre. If you do not wish to go there by yourself, speak to the Rector or worship leaders on your way out and they will ask someone to accompany you.
  • The 6.30pm Service again varies from week to week. Holy Communion is usually once a month and the other Services are various forms of Evening prayer using different Service books. The music is usually traditional hymns accompanied by either the organ or piano.
  • On Wednesday the 10.30am Service is Holy Communion, similar to the early morning Sunday Service, with a ’thought for the day’ rather than a sermon, and lasts in the region of 45 minutes.

What we believe:

We are a Christian church, part of the Church of England, and believe that all can have relationship with God. We believe this relationship with God is possible because of Jesus (God’s only Son) who invites us to follow Him.

We are part of the Churches Together in Glenfield, which includes the Glenfield Methodist Church and have occasional united Services.

If you are interested in exploring the Christian faith then please come along on Sunday or contact the Rector.

Is it just Sundays?

Absolutely not! God is with us all week long and we aim to lead lives pleasing to Him. We’re not perfect and we do make mistakes, but we want to make a positive difference in everything we do.

To further encourage us we can meet in one of our midweek groups.

  • On 2nd and 4th Thursday afternoon of the month a substantial sized group meet in the Church Centre for fellowship, Bible teaching, prayer, and singing.
  • On 1st and 3rd Wednesday evening of the month the Growth Group, a small group, meet in someone’s house for fellowship, Bible teaching and prayer.
  • Once a month, on a Monday afternoon, we have Whatspot meeting in the Church Centre. A very small group with Bible reading and teaching aimed at people with little knowledge of the Bible, non church-goers and those seeking answers to questions.
  • For those just starting to look into Christianity, from time to time, we run a discovery course.

For all of these you would need to speak to the Rector, Revd John Sharpe.

Accessibility

Our premises, both church and church centre, are accessible to those with disabilities through the main entrances. Unfortunately there are steps up to the communion rail, but a quiet word with any member of the clergy or the churchwarden will be enough to have Communion/ prayer of blessing brought to you in your seat or for you to come to the Chancel steps to receive.

Both buildings are fitted with a loop system and we have large print hymn books and Service books for some of our Services. There is a separate toilet for use by the disabled in the Church Centre. If you have a disability and we could make better provision, please let us know.
